Cultivating a love of reading: World Book Day turns into World Book Week at KES Academy
BackAs one of the biggest events in any school’s calendar, KES Academy went all out for World Book Day turning what is traditionally a one day event, into an extravaganza that lasted an entire week.
All of us at KES Academy have been working hard to develop a culture of reading and a love for books, so we had to go all out for World Book Day, getting everyone involved in celebrating all things books, over the course of an entire week, rather than a singular day.
Our big hit was our creation of the Masked Reader - based on the popular ITV show, The Masked Singer, our KES Academy version saw staff read extracts from their favourite books over the course of the week, with students having to guess where the quotes and excerpts were being recited from.
Outside of the Masked Reader, over 150 of our brilliant pupils designed reading posters which we will be digitally producing for them and displaying around our school on our digital screens over the coming weeks.
On the day itself, of course all our staff took the chance to dress up as their favourite book characters with all our pupils voting for their favourite, alongside visiting our new library where they were able to take part in several reading-themed events and activities, such as writing six-word stories and telling other KES Academy students what they were reading.
On World Book Day our students were able to pick-up a free book of their choice and were also encouraged to design an accompanying bookmark which will double-up as their reading ruler.
Overall, World Book Day (in our case, week) 2023 was a huge success and has really set the bar high for the years to come. It is hard to believe that just 12 months ago we were a school without a library, where you had to look really hard to find a reference to reading or a shared love for it, but now, thanks to our new library and the hard work everyone has put in to instil this love of reading across our school, our new library is buzzing with pupils, all of whom are full of excitement and have a genuine interest in reading.
We can’t wait for World Book Day 2024 and will be continuing to expand further on our students’ love of reading across the year with even more events and activities in-between.
