How Year Ten’s Emma Hutchinson is about to set the literary world alight!

With the second draft of her teenage fantasy novel, ‘Queen of the Flames’ currently attracting contracts and book deals from a range of publishers, year ten student – Emma Hutchinson – popped into Doctrina Digest HQ (our school newspaper at KES) to talk about her remarkable journey and submit a sample of the wonderful prose that is causing such a stir.

Emma said:

“I have enjoyed writing since I could remember. I started writing this book when I was bored on holiday, almost 3 years ago and have been writing it on and off since then. In November of last year, I finished my first draft, and at the beginning of this year I finished the second draft and sent it off to many publishers. I have so far received contracts from three - no rejections. The book is called "Queen of the Flames" and is a teenage fantasy based around a teenage girl, called Zoe, who has another persona of a dragon, and fire powers. She meets this guy, Jake, who also has a dragon persona, with lightning powers. Together they find another world filled with dragons where Zoe was chosen to be Queen at birth.”

- I say nothing to that. I don’t get the chance to as a group of people barge through the double doors that I entered through moments ago. I remove my knife from its holster and sparks fly from my fingers as I lunge in their direction. I send fireball after fireball in their direction, and when one gets close enough, I send a knife across their throat. Jake’s back presses into mine as everyone surrounds us and we step in circles; he sends purple bolts in all directions, his veins purple. The fire radiates off me, flames dancing as sparks fly from my fingertips. None of the invaders can get close to me, but the ones that do, throw knives or slice swords at me. Some create cuts, but none deep enough to do serious harm. -

A massive well done to Emma, we can't wait to see where this path takes her, and hope to see her go from success to success on this journey. All on the Doctrina Digest team are very grateful for the opportunity to have showcased her talents further. There is no doubt that Emma has a very bright future and we are so proud of her achievements to date.
